To me, nothing is sadder than looking at bare soil in garden beds. Without a protective cover crop of plant residues and their roots, soils are exposed to wind and water erosion and drying effects. In high yield, intensively managed garden beds, however, the goal is to produce as many crops as possible. This includes planting as late as possible for late fall harvests. Read more
